As artists, we often get lost in the technicalities of our craft - the composition, lighting, and gear. Yet, it is colour that breathes life into our images, turning them into windows to the soul, evoking emotions, and connecting us to our audience in ways words often cannot.

Imagine a world without colour. A world where everything is monochromatic, where sunsets lack their warm golden hues, and the forests lose their lush green vibrancy. It is colour that allows us to experience the world's beauty in all its glory, to perceive the nuances of our surroundings, and to cherish the moments that define us.

As photographers, we wield the power of colour like a painter wields their brush. The way we use colour can drastically alter the mood and atmosphere of an image. Soft pastel tones may create a sense of nostalgia and innocence, while bold and contrasting colours can evoke a feeling of drama and intensity. The colour palette we choose reflects not only the scene before us but also our emotions, intentions, and our very essence as artists.

Planctae

In Greek mythology the Planctae or (Wondering rocks) were a group of rocks between which the sea was mercilessly violent. The colour palette of this image tells tails from an era of wooden ships and adventures powered solely by Mother Nature and a plentiful supply of Rum.

Sea Stumps

A scattering of jagged rocks leave no safe passage to shore and means of escape from the incoming sea fog soon to engulf the visual senses. A 30 second exposure smoothes out the crystal clear Cornish sea with it's turquoise hue giving emphasis to the complementing colour of the foreground rocks.

Attrition

Time and Tide can be seen playing the long game. Working together in an effort to sculpt the world before us. A small portion of the play at hand is all we get to witness and admire.

Brush Strokes

Colour and texture two different yet complimentary visual stimuli working together to engender a feeling of playful fun. Droplets of water dance together celebrating the abundant flow of tranquility.

Spring Tide

Soft pastel Cerulean follows the setting sun as the rise of spring tide blends man made structures with the ocean.

The Ness

The sun had set behind the hills of Dartmoor National Park behind me some 30 minutes before this image was taken. There was just one cloud in the sky that was catching some diffracted light from where I do not know. This was a 4 minute exposure in which time the lone cloud had moved across the frame leaving the abstract scene of colour we see.

Abyssal Plain

Imagine the ocean drained and an unexplored world reviled itself for you to simply wander around and investigate.

Migmatite

The Jurassic Coast is home to an area of high grade metamorphism where one beach alone contains countless geological wonders. After a long demanding hike along the coastal path my journey ends, My eyes deceive me like the oasis of a hot desert my brain only see's what my body desires, Rib eye.

MYR

A Coastal scene that visually represents the passing of Millions of years with besides the inevitable erosion powered by the Moon does not appear to have changed. I should imagine if time travel were possible this is what it would have looked like.

Acclivity

Upon descending the slopes following a day of very poor visibility on the highest peaks of the Pyrenees Mountains I left my physically exhausted family to rest whilst I went to fetch the car. On my approach to the car park the cloud began to thin for a brief moment revealing the mountain slope with its dusting of snow adding depth and texture to its appearance. I quickly set up my equipment and had just enough time to make this image.

Autumn Heaven

A transition of emotions captured in time.  The warmth of the morning sun lights the autumnal trees rising to an unforgiving altitude of snow and ice where their counterparts no longer seize the day.

Glow

For a brief moment a warm sense of relief appears in the depths of the dark cold forest where life has been living in the shadows for too long.

Autumn Inferno

Darkness descends and the wind picks up. The storm moves in driving the atmosphere of the forest to new heights.

Last Stop

The last point of civilisation with nothing but miles and miles of empty moorland to explore. In an over populated world where an unquenchable thirst for consumption prevails I find this place ever increasingly inviting. The beauty of peace and nature and the unique eco system of the moors has stollen my subconscious mind.

Neorxnawang

This name is an Old English noun used to translate the Christian concept of paradise in Anglo-Saxon literature. Scholars propose that the noun originally derives from Germanic mythology, referring to a "heavenly meadow" or place without toil or worries. This one word perfectly describes the emotion this magical Autumn scene offers the viewers eye.

Larry Forest

Larry means misty and refers to a specific kind of land fog as distinguished from another particular kind of sea fog in the area around the River Teign in Devon England. This image was taken a mile away from the River Teign high up on a hill.

Summer's End

Signs of the Autumn Equinox begin to show with the arrival of fog and the first signs of a change in the forest leafs.

Antique Wood

With summers end comes Autumns time and the woodlands green must fade. The palettes ombre moves to rust for the elements within the shade.

Silver Birch

Golden hues of the low winter sun kiss the valley floor. The silver bark and silver leaves feel the warmth of the sun once more.

Autumn

With long months of dark days and wet weather ahead I have always been perplexed as to why the vast majority of people when asked would say Autumn was their favourite month of the year. It can only be for the visual spectacle of colour that we get to enjoy for a short while that breaks up the yearly colour wheel.

This vibrant young tree thrives under the wing of the wise elder managing to hold on to its golden leaves well into the winter months.

Deep Forest

Way down deep in the river valley the relentless rain helps give the impression of an under water forest scene. Subtle light makes its way through the canopy adding vibrancy to a saturated forest floor.

Rainbow Cloud

Once in a life time capture never to be seen again. This image depicts the beauty of photography. A bank of fog rolls across the moor in my direction catching the morning sunrise diffracting the light causing a distorted rainbow within the fog. The main subject of the scene is now gone blown over by strong wind making it impossible to recreate this image for many generations to come.

La Gave

In French the word Gave as used in the western part of the Pyrenees is a generic name referring to a torrential river of which this is throughout most of the year. This stunning Autumn scene was captured just where the west meets the midi Pyrenees . Any further to the right and the term Gave would be changed to Neste.

Bag Tor

I was drawn to this boulder balanced on the edge of the Tor its form reminds me of a favourite film from my childhood "The flight of the navigator" the way the tree leans with the way the granite boulder is shaped tells me that the wind has been blowing in the same direction for thousands of years.

Back In 10

To add to my collection of abandoned buildings images I thought I would visit this roadside structure located on a stretch of road high up in Dartmoor National Park. I had seen this building a few times and logged it in the back of my mind for future reference. A sunny summers evening after work with time on my hands I took a drive to the location to see what I could make of this scene. As I arrived the road was empty and the setting sun was perfect resulting in this image.

Lament Wood

Deep black shadows promote a feeling of darkness and sorrow. The quality of light on the subject enhances every tiny detail of this one small portion of a vast forest.

River Walkham

Deep in the Dale through the almost impassable woodland is a Shangri-La where not a soul goes. For the effort required is too much to bare for the average Joe.
