The
Ten
Ox Herding Pictures, which date from 11th century China, depict a boy
in search of an ox. When the ox is found it is captured and ridden. Then,
however, first the ox then the boy fade away and enlightenment is achieved.
If the ox represents 'self' then it would seem that you first need to find
'self' before you can lose 'self' and find enlightenment.
