But finding self, or self remembering was the central tenet of the teaching of George Gurdjieff Remember, from the Ten Ox Herding Pictures, you have to find 'self' before you can lose 'self'. Self remembering is a sensation which involves becoming supremely aware of your own consciousness, your own uniqueness and your own perceptions of the world around you. It is, in fact, a deeply scary experience which most people only have in childhood and learn to forget as they grow up.
Why, then, should loss of 'self' be a prerequisite to enlightenment. It is because we are all programmed or conditioned to see the world in a certain way. When we lose 'self' we lose that conditioning. The 'doors of perception' are cleansed and the universe appears infinite.
